THIRTY-SIX
Everyone in the household was up and moving by eight the next morning. Tayla did not make a big breakfast but told everyone to go for self. Tyrone Jr. was dressed in his knee length plaid shorts and a green polo shirt with his black Timberland loafers with no socks. He was totally dressed like a college student not of his race. Iris had gotten him the shoes for a birthday present. Tyrone Jr. was nothing like Tyrone Sr. For as long as Tayla had known Tyrone Sr. he had worn baggy jeans and Air Jordan’s. He did not deviate from his shoe game; he would not wear regular Nikes. It had to be Air Jordan’s. That was ok behavior when she met him in high school because at that time she also was addicted to tennis shoes, but she thought as people reached their 30’s, things should change.
Tyrone Sr. was now almost 40 and still lived by wearing baggy jeans and Air Jordan’s. Tyrone Jr. friends picked him up at nine. Tayla slipped her son a $50 bill and told him to be safe and to enjoy his day. She told him to be back by five that evening so the family could go out to dinner.
Tayla and the girls all dressed in sundresses and flip flops. They knew to keep their toes free for after the pedicures. Tayshell’s hair still looked great and only needed one of the front curls touched up. Iris, Larisa, Janisa and Katiana showed up before 10. They were all dressed in bright spring colors and flip flops as well. Those were definitely three mini Iris’ walking around. All the girls were talking and chatting 100 miles a minute when Nadia, Sondra and Meka walked in.
“What’s the limo for?” asked Nadia.
“It was a surprise big mouth.” Iris laughed glaring at Nadia.
“Oh, my fault.” Nadia laughed. All the girls ran out the front door to see the limo.
“Iris, what have you done, you know you didn’t have to do that.” Tayla said.
“Yes, I did. You only get one prom and you know her date or shall I say neglectful father is not going to get one and I ordered a weekend deal so it’s for us first.” Iris said smiling.
Tayla knew there was no arguing with Iris and if that is how she wanted to spend her money, she would not complain, plus this had Tayshell beaming. Nadia introduced Meka to everyone and then Tayshell showed Meka to the bathroom in her bedroom where she did her hair touchup. Meka told Tayshell that she was also great with makeup and could come back tomorrow evening and do her makeup also when she touched up her hair if she liked. Tayshell told Meka that she did not wear a lot of makeup, but would love the help. Meka confirmed it was ok with Tayla. Tayla told her it was fine and that she would pay her to do that. Meka informed Tayla that Nadia had been more than generous for the five minutes of work she just did.
